World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The Convention is based on the requirements for long-term tobacco control effects, and the warning signs are very clear about the effectiveness of tobacco control. A survey shows that if the warning pattern is labeled with a cigarette pack, 86% of adults will not give cigarettes as gifts to others, and 83% of smokers will also reduce the habit of giving cigarettes.

In order to effectively control smoking, countries around the world have responded to the call of the organization, with Thailand, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea… adding terrifying warning pictures to cigarette boxes.

After implementing smoking control warning charts and cigarette packs, the smoking rate in Canada decreased by 12% to 20% in 2001. Neighboring Thailand has also been incentivized, with the graphic warning area increasing from 50% in 2005 to 85%; Nepal has even raised this standard to 90%!

Countries such as Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, South Africa, New Zealand, Norway, Uruguay, and Sweden are promoting legislative implementation. There are two very representative countries for smoking control: Australia and the United Kingdom.

Australia attaches great importance to the warning signs of cigarettes, and their packaging warning signs account for the largest proportion in the world, with 75% on the front and 90% on the back. The box covers such a large area of terrifying images, causing many smokers to lose their purchasing desire.

Britain is filled with ugly cigarette boxes

On May 21st, the UK implemented a new regulation that completely abolished the differentiated packaging used by cigarette manufacturers to promote their products.

New regulations require that cigarette packaging must be uniformly made into dark olive green square boxes. It is a color between green and brown, labeled Pantone 448 C on the Pantone color chart, and criticized by smokers as the “ugliest color”.

In addition, over 65% of the box area must be covered by text warnings and lesion images, emphasizing the negative impact of smoking on health.
